The Lifestyle
"Sweet, curious, gentle, playful & ohhh so soft...the alpaca"

While it is true that Alpacas have brought impressive financial returns to families all across America, for many of us it is the fun, hands-on nature of this lifestyle that has really captured our attention. We have found a simple, rewarding way of life. Even if you don't have the land and are committed to a full-time career, you can still begin your alpaca adventure by purchasing and boarding at a nearby alpaca farm or ranch.

Visit Alpaca Farms...as many as you can!

There are many farms to chose from. Some are really small, some are really big. It is like the difference in the Holiday Inn and a Bed & Breakfast. Either one may work for your needs. One may have more years experience, but be less flexible, One may have many animals to chose from, but the follow up care is a little less then what you needed. We are not saying that a large farm is bad. There are some fabulous large farms, that may be able to give you exactly what you need, but don't over look the small farm either. They are eager to please and if you feel they are knowledgeable, have quality animals you are interested in, and are friendly, chances are they will give you the undivided attention you need as you start out.

Attend Shows & Seminars

Another good idea to familiarize yourself with alpacas is to attend a local alpaca show. Many Seminars are geared toward the first time alpaca owner and can be very helpful.

They usually have great seminars at AOBA alpaca shows, or many farms will host a seminar. You will find a list of shows and seminars at the AOBA (Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association) website, as well as through some of the affiliate club websites, also listed on our links page.

The Contract

We are not attorneys, so you are pretty much on your own here...but we can say, read...read... read your purchase contracts & be sure that everything that matters to you is in writing, be it, who you want your alpaca bred to, how many breedings you get, who gets to keep the fiber if your agisting, agisting costs, etc. Otherwise what should be a win/win situation could turn sour. The most important thing you can do is learn as much as you can about these animals before you make your purchase. I think everyone in this business wants to have the same things you are probably looking for, and they may mean well, but some are just better at it then others.

Bringing Them Home

What a wonderful day it is, however, there is much to consider when you first bring your babies home...fencing, shelter, pasture, feed, minerals, cria care, vet care, monthly shots, toenail clipping & shearing.. The check list can feel overwhelming, but if you do your homework and buy from a farm you feel will help you answer the questions you have, and you take the time to do what you need on your farm to prepare before your alpacas arrive it will be a happy homecoming.

Although you may only need spend an hour or two a day to care for your herd, one must be reminded that raising livestock, even the easy going alpaca, is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week job. Of Course, there is always the opportunity to own as an investment without all of these concerns, by having our farm take care of your animals while you own, or become a partial owner in an animal. That way you can have the tax advantages, have fun farm visits & even make a profit, but not worry about the day to day care...and for some that is the perfect way to have a part of the country lifestyle, but still continue to live the city life they enjoy. I think most of us want that daily interaction with these fascinating creatures and the joy they bring, but it is nice to have options.

Alpacas are adorable, fascinating creatures that just happen to have one of the most luxurious fibers on the planet!
